Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Canceled for PS5

A teaser for the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) remake, announced for PlayStation 5 during Sony’s September 2021 showcase, generated significant excitement.

However, reports from last year indicated the project faced challenges.

Why Did Sony Remove Mentions of the KOTOR Remake?

On September 28, Reddit’s Gaming Leaks and Rumors community highlighted the disappearance of the teaser trailer from PlayStation’s channel.

Twitter user Crusader3456 later revealed that Sony also deleted tweets about the teaser from the 2021 showcase.

The only remaining mention appears to be a tweet promoting multiple titles from the event.

While it’s possible the remake is still in development, Sony’s actions could indicate deeper issues.

The project, initially a PS5 exclusive, has faced significant setbacks, including development struggles and budget constraints at parent company Embracer.

In July 2022, Bloomberg reported that developers had spent considerable resources on a proof-of-concept demo that failed to meet expectations during a review.

This led to the departure of several senior team members. By August, development had shifted from Aspyr Media in Texas to Saber Interactive in Europe.

Over the past year, Embracer Group has faced financial turmoil, leading to game cancellations and studio closures, including the shutdown of Volition.

In June, Aspyr also canceled a promised DLC pack for its remastered version of KOTOR 2 on the Nintendo Switch, prompting a lawsuit from a fan.

A successful KOTOR remake would be a major achievement for any publisher, especially given the ongoing popularity of Star Wars content on Disney+.

However, the combination of development difficulties and Embracer’s financial struggles raises questions about the project’s future.

While the fate of the remake remains uncertain, fans continue to hold out hope for its revival.

Neither Sony nor Embracer has provided recent updates or comments on the status of the game.
